GOS Specialist Supplementary Eye Examinations (GOS-SS)

Published on 25 November 2025

GOS Specialist Supplementary (GOS-SS)

The Scottish Government has introduced changes to GOS with the aim of reducing waiting times and pressures on hospital eye services (HES) by ensuring that more patients can be managed in the community for acute anterior eye conditions. These changes allow independent prescriber (IP) Optometrists to provide GOS Specialist Supplementary (GOS-SS) to patients who would normally be referred to HES for treatment.

Implementation of GOS-SS

On 1 August 2025, the Interim Measure for GOS-SS was implemented, enabling IP Optometrists to manage 9 (nine) acute anterior eye conditions. Please read PCA(O)2025(04) for further information on these conditions.

After the Full Implementation of GOS-SS on 19 January 2026, IP Optometrists will be able to manage 10 (ten) acute anterior eye conditions. Please read PCA(O)2025(08) for further information.

If you are an IP Optometrist and wish to provide GOS-SS, please complete the relevant application forms found on this page.

Please note that Stream A forms will be validated against the data held on the National Primary Care Clinician Database (NPCCD). You can check if your information is accurate by signing in to the OCDA application. Please see our schedule communication for further information.
