I understand that NHS bought much more midazolam than in previous years, during the recent covid situation.

Did they also increase their purchase of flumazenil?

Response

I can advise you that we have now completed the search of our records and can provide you with the following information:

The NHS in Scotland purchased a higher volume of flumazenil during 2020 before returning to pre-2020 levels in 2021. Data for 2022 indicates that purchases increased again but not to 2020 levels.

Please see below table detailing purchases of flumazenil by health boards via the national contract:

  • YEAR - 2019. AMPOULES PURCHASED = 5525
  • YEAR - 2020. AMPOULES PURCHASED = 12900
  • YEAR - 2021. AMPOULES PURCHASED = 5050
  • YEAR - 2022. AMPOULES PURCHASED = 9310
  • GRAND TOTAL = 32785
