This archived Scottish Health Planning Note (SHPN) 4 Supplement 1 2008 version 1 was conceived to improve isolation partly by upgrades to existing NHS ward facilities, providing a hierarchy of 3-bedroom suite types. Its scope and exclusions have been superseded over time and by the publication, since 2008, of updated Isolation Facility Guidance for NHS England/ Northern Ireland and Wales. The recent 2025 NHS England Guidance Health Building Note (HBN) 04-01 Supplement 1 is available for Rest of UK only. NHSScotland Assure are reviewing and do not encourage NHSScotland use.
We encourage any NHS board considering a special vented isolation facility investment, or applying HBN 04-01 or other Isolation Suite Guidance, to make early contact and request specific support via our National Services Scotland (NSS) NHSScotland Assure Enquiry Form.
