Recruitment and Retention Allowance update

Scottish Government accept there are challenges in recruiting and retaining dentists in some Health Board areas, particularly for those areas out with the central belt that may be more geographically remote. Following a review a number of changes have been made in relation to this allowance payment to better reflect the current circumstances. The changes include an update to which areas are eligible and further changes to the conditions of entitlement to allow dentists undertaking vocational training in an eligible area to claim this allowance. These changes are effective from 7 February 2022 and are detailed in PCA (D) (2022)2 - Determination XIII - Recruitment and Retention Allowances.

How do I claim for Recruitment and Retention Allowance?

There are three types of Recruitment and Retention Allowance, each with different qualifying criteria. Therefore you should initially discuss this allowance with your NHS Board. They will guide you through the process and provide you with advice on whether you are eligible to claim, this is dependent on a number of eligibility criteria’s and also whether you have taken up a post in a classification 1 or 2 area. They will advise which form you require to submit either to us or National Education Scotland (NES).

Claim Form GP219

If you are having your name included on sub part A of the dental list for the first time, within 3 months of completion of training, please complete a GP219 claim form. The full qualifying criteria is available in the Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR). The payment of either £25,000 (Classification 1 area) or £15,000 (Classification 2 area) is made over a 2 year period at £12,500 per annum for Classification 1 areas and £7,500 per annum for Classification 2 areas.

Claim Form GP227

If you are having your name included on sub part A of the Dental list for the first time, or after a break of at least 5 years, please complete the GP227 claim form. The full qualifying criteria is available in the Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR).The payment of either £25,000 (Classification 1 area) or £15,000 (Classification 2 area) is made over a 2 year period at £12,500 per annum for Classification 1 areas and £7,500 per annum for Classification 2 areas.

Applying to NES for recruitment and retention allowance under Vocational Training approved course

If you are having your name included in the second part of a dental list, as an Assistant, and are undertaking a course of vocational training approved by NHS Education for Scotland, but taking up a post in a classification 1 or 2 area please apply direct to National Education Scotland on their designated claim form. The full qualifying criteria is available in the Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR). The payment of either £12,500 (Classification 1 area) or £7,500 (Classification 2 area) is paid in year one.

To note: You may apply again to us when you take up a post on part 1 of the list should you remain in a classification 1 or 2 area.
