Find out if an area is deprived

You can find out if a patient lives in an area of deprivation using the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) tool.

The SIMD tool helps you identify patients that may need different levels of care and enables you to manage their claims more effectively.

Before you get started

When using postcode analysis, SIMD 1 is listed as being most deprived and SIMD 5 being least deprived.

Using the SIMD look-up, two potential responses may occur:

  1. SIMD area eg SIMD Area 5
  2. No SIMD for this postcode

Reasons for no SIMD being returned are:

  • new postcodes that have not been assigned a SIMD value as yet
  • this postcode does not exist
  • no deprivation information attached to the postcode.

If there is not a SIMD value, then claim the codes linked to SIMD 4-5 only.
