How to manage your NHS connection
Published on 16 April 2026
Managing your NHS connection
We have provided practices with a Palo Alto device to connect to NHS electronic services. The Palo Alto connects to your network via Port 1 on the front of the device.
The lights on the front of the Palo Alto should be green:
- PWR
- STAT
- Port 1
The ALM light may blink on and off.
Troubleshooting
No lights
Check that the power cable is plugged in to the power source as well as the device and that the power is switched on.
No Port 1 light
Check where the network cable is plugged into your network. It should be plugged in to Port 1 on the Palo Alto, and into WIFI router or network switch.
IP address
The Palo Alto is given an IP address on your network and is pre-set with your broadband default gateway IP address. If you change your broadband provider or router the IP addresses/Default Gateway may change and the Palo Alto will need to be reconfigured. We would advise that you get someone to change the router’s Internal IP Addresses and Default Gateway back to what it was originally set as. This is the quickest option. If we are required to change the Palo Alto details, then we would log a call with our 3rd party supplier and this currently has a 10 day SLA for the change to be made.
Route and IP Details
On each PC that you require to access any of the NHS Services, 2 static routes will be added:
- Route 164.134.0.0 for eopthalmics.mhs.scot.nhs.uk & www.bo.scot.nhs.uk
- Route 10.240.0.0 for www.scigw.scot.nhs.uk
Please follow the instructions on managing your static routes using the guide that was provided when your Palo Alto was installed. If you do not have the guide, email National Information and Statistics Group (NISG) to request a copy.

Check list
Can you connect to the internet from your practice?
Make sure you can connect to the internet from your practice. Try opening a web browser and performing a google search. If you cannot please check your own internet connection.
Can you access eOphthalmic Web Payments?
If you are having issues accessing eOphthalmic web payments, make sure you are using the correct web address: https://eophthalmics.mhs.scot.nhs.uk/
If you are still unable to access eOphthalmic Web Payments, try accessing other NHS sites such as SCI Gateway or Business Objects. This will help identify whether it is an issue with the Palo Alto connection.
If you are able to access SCI Gateway and Business Objects but not eOphthalmic web payments, please contact nss.psdophthalmic@nhs.scot
Are you unable to SCI Gateway and Business Objects?
If you are unable to access other NHS sites such as SCI Gateway or Business Objects, please reboot your Palo Alto.
You can reboot your Palo Alto by switching off the device and unplugging the power cable for approximately one minute. Then plug it back it, switch it on and wait 20 minutes before trying to access SCI Gateway and Business Objects.
If you have tried this a few times and you are still unable to access these sites, please contact: nss.nisgservicedesk@nhs.scot
Are you able to access eOphthalmic Web Payments from some computers within the practice and not others?
If you can access eOphthalmic web payments from other computers in the practice, please follow the instructions on managing your static routes using the guide that was provided when your Palo Alto was installed. If you do not have the guide, email National Information and Statistics Group (NISG) to request a copy.
