Scottish Hilar Bile Duct Cancer service

Published on 25 November 2025

The Scottish Hilar Bile Duct Cancer service supports discussion and surgical management of resectable Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma. A number of inoperable cases may require discussion due to complex biliary drainage requirements that cannot be addressed at regional centres. This group of patients will be referred for consideration for complex biliary drainage only. The primary end point of service is to have successfully carried out curative surgery or complex biliary drainage on the patient.

What is Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma?

Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma is a bile duct cancer arising at or near the biliary confluence. Surgery requires the ability to undertake complex vascular and biliary resections and reconstructions together with advanced management of liver dysfunction. Patients with no metastases and who are considered fit enough to undergo major resection will be referred to the multidisciplinary team for surgery.
