About the risk share scheme
Published on 27 September 2019
NHSScotland will cover the costs of treatment or care for patients with incredibly rare conditions.
We manage a number of national financial risk share schemes on behalf of NHSS boards. These allow NHSScotland to pool funding across the country, so that boards can share the financial impact of any unpredictable expenditure for very rare cases that require high cost interventions and drugs.
Every board will contribute a proportion of the costs from an agreed list of treatments. Without these schemes, an individual health board could face significant financial risk.
The range of therapies we cover with these arrangements is reviewed by NHS boards annually.
