Medicines Homecare

A medicines homecare service is the delivery of hospital-prescribed medicines and, where appropriate, associated care, directly to a patient's home or chosen address by a provider of medicines homecare services.

If a homecare service is required, the strong preference of NHS Scotland is for homecare services to be commissioned by the NHS, however manufacturer commissioned arrangements will be considered.

The NHS Scotland Medicines Homecare National Governance and Management Group leads the once for Scotland review of medicines homecare service proposals. Detailed guidance on the process for the proposal, review, implementation and on-going management of new or amended manufacturer-commissioned homecare services, can be found below:

It can take up to six months to review and implement a new or amended homecare service; early engagement will help ensure that services are in place from the point of need. The single point of contact for companies to propose a homecare service in Scotland is the National Procurement Medicines Homecare team: nss.pchc@nhs.scot.

The form to be used by manufacturers to propose a manufacturer-commissioned homecare service can be found below. This should be submitted to nss.pchc@nhs.scot at the same time it is submitted to the National Medicines Homecare Committee (NHMC).
